Sept 27, 2007 - Niacin refers to both nicotinic acid (which can make your skin flush) and nicotinamide. It is
only the nicotinic acid that improves lipid values (lowers LDL, lowers triglycerides and raises HDL). If it is in
the form of nicotinamide or inositol hexaniacinate, it does not does have any meaningful effect on your
lipids. The sustained-release forms of nicotinic acid may have less flushing. Taking an aspirin or ibuprofen
before taking niacin may help to reduce flushing side effects.
